Still Medieval 2 and probably M3 atleast have the plus that it covers all of europe abit of africa and the middleeast so faction and unit diversity would be a bit better then the smaller scaled games like troy and shogun. At least until they release a game based on another franchise, such aus Total War:LotR or something like that.Yeah i hear you i dont think any total war game will have as much unit and faction diversity as warhammer. Total War Warhammer is such a great game, I believe it will forever be the #1 in the Total War franchise. The units are so boring and because of that, the fights are boring too. I tried going back to Shogun 2 for example, and I couldn't believe that I spent over 400 hours in it. I want my monsters and dinosaurs and stuff. The new "Troy" for example looks so boring. While I'd certainly enjoy medieval 3 for some time, I'm pretty sure that I'll miss the unit diversity in Warhammer. The primary appeal of Total War are the battles after all, and there's no denying that sending a bunch of War Mammoths to squish thousands of ratmen with gatling guns is a lot more fun than having two units of dudes with spears sporting slightly different hats poking each other to death. Or maybe they would just feel like slogs instead, I dunno. I think if Historical battles were slower, fewer and farther between, and involved heavier use of formations and tactics it would distinguish itself more from the arcade fun of Warhammer. 3K had possibly the best campaign gameplay of the entire series, but the battles were a mish-mash of boring historical units and heroes that could trash half an army by themselves (especially in Romance, but bodyguards were still OP in Records) making battles feel irrelevant. I love historical total war and I love history but I can't g back to 15 different flavours of spearmanii now.IMO History should just focus a lot more on campaign gameplay and battle realism. Now they've opened the fantasy money box, history will never be able to carry their dev budget again. It does go to the wider issue for CA moving forward though. Even ignoring the Warhammer shaped elephant in the room sagas are just a failed experiment. Seems like the Greenskin AI was quite buffed as well, in my Imrik campaign Grimgor is destroying everything in sight and has called a WAAAGH on Karaz-a-karak already by turn 30 while sitting at 13 settlements and far away strength rank 1. Can't wait to ravage the Empire with my Vampire bros. Haven't played Greenskins yet, I'll probably go for Azhag first. He's got unique dragon hunting quest battles as well, but I bailed out of the first one I saw when I noticed I would have to face an entire army of powerful monsters + reinforcements + a hella buffed 15K HP Unbreakable dragon. It was a glorious slaughter against 13 000 enemies. Also, it seems the Skaven AI is now very much encouraged to spam the fuck out of Skavenslaves, I was just besieged by 4 full stacks of these + a couple Night Runners when Eshin declared me. Helps that the man himself is a beast, his Dragonhorn ability is almost straight up OP, and he starts with a Fire mage who are the best early game casters thanks to Burning Head. You get to use Sun Dragons and Dragon Princes right off turn 1, and a building allows you to recruit the latter on turn 10 or so, enabling you to make a killer early game stack.
